TRAVELING TO THE SOUTH                                                                                   MEDICINE WHEEL    |     EAST    |    SOUTH   |    WEST    |    NORTH
The direction of the South is the Path of the Inner Child - to access that part of ourselves that uses the faith, trust and innocence that we had as children to make our way through life. From the South we are able to see things with greater clarity and to begin to understand our own individual natures. The South is where we heal - with the knowing of Self.

The quality embraced by the South is trust and innocence. It is enjoying the experience of discovery, finding joy in new knowledge and letting go of fears and false values.

The totem of the South is the Mouse (and sometimes the Coyote). Mouse is so small and defenseless against the rest of the world that he must rely on trust and instinct to live. Much larger forces of Spirit are at work in the world, and Mouse understands how humble a creature he is in relation to all this. But good and surprising things can happen when trust inspires Mouse to make a bold move.

Coyote is the trickster - he shatters illusions and laughs at himself. His lessons may sometimes be harsh, but they do bring us knowledge of ourselves. This teaches us to examine our own feelings and emotions - and to be guided by them.

The element of the South is Fire. Fire is the radiant energy of transformation. Fire contains the great powers of cleansing and expansion.

The color of the South is red - the color of life force (blood), health and vitality.

The Kingdom associated with the South is the Plant Kingdom. To align yourself with the healing properties of the South - walk amongst this kingdom. Touch the plants, touch the trees - share your energy with them, and they will share their energy and knowledge with you.

The time period of the South is the past. Emotions that we are holding on to, that are blocking us, are from the past. This is where we need to heal.

Through the South we become as children - we understand, and we heal.

WRITINGS OF HEALING
These inspirations were compiled by the Turtle Clan in preparation for their migration to the South - the Direction of Healing.

Prayer for the Earth  (Pablo Neruda)
For once on the face of the earth let's not speak in any language.
Let's stop for one second and not move our arms so much.
It would be an exotic moment without rush, without engines.
We would all be together in a sudden strangeness.
Fishermen in the cold sea would not harm whales
And the man gathering salt would look at his hurt hands.
Those who prepare green wars, wars with gas, wars with fire,
Victory with no survivors
Would put on clean clothes and walk about with their brothers in the
shade doing nothing.
What I want should not be confused with total inactivity.
Life is what it is about.
I want no truck with death.
If we were not so single minded about keeping our lives moving,
and for once could do nothing, perhaps a huge silence might interrupt
this sadness of never understanding ourselves
And of threatening ourselves with death.
Perhaps the earth can teach us when everything seems dead and later
proves to be alive.

Healing Path (Jamie Sams)
Teach me how to gather
The fragments of my soul,
Reclaiming lost potential,
I seek to become whole.

Let me find forgiveness,
Embracing a new way to be,
Releasing the hurt and anger
Toward all who wounded me.

Let me heal my human body,
The sacred vessel of my soul,
Mending all the unhealed aspects,
I find within my Medicine Bowl.

Let me find the courage
To face the enemies within,
Healing all my weaknesses,
Honoring the warrior therein.

Let me honor my sacred promise,
To be loyal to my healing quest,
Never deserting my Medicine,
Nor the heart within my breast.

HOMEWORK FOR THE SOUTH

Use Your Element.
Write down your element and hang the picture you drew of
your element in a prominent place. Use this element to help
you heal in the South.

Create a Medicine Wheel for Healing.
Reflect and journal on on your 3 answers during your
ceremony. Use your tobacco.

Seek the help of an Expert.
Commit to at least one session of personal healing such as
Massage, cranio, reflexology, acupuncture, psychotherapy,
reiki, etc. Arrange a trade perhaps if you cannot afford this.

Reflect on your Healing Ruin.
Read and research more about the ruin that you selected. Write about this in your journal.

Build a Shield for the West.
The medicine shield is an expression of the unique gifts that it's maker wishes to impart about his or her current life journey. This can be a new level of personal growth, or illustrate the next mountain a person wishes to climb.

Every shield carries medicine through it's art and self-expression. Each shield is the essence of a time and space that carries certain aspects of knowledge. All persons carry shields of the lessons they learned from the four directions on the medicine wheel.

They are the healing tools we give ourselves to sooth the spirit and empower the will. The truth needs no explanation, just reflection. This allows intuition to guide the heart so that humankind may celebrate more than it mourns.

WRITINGS OF HEALING continued...

When you call upon the love of Creator and exercise Pure Intent... There will be Miracles!

The past is a memory. The future is hope. The present is a gift. That's why it's called the present.

When you heal yourself, and assist others with their self-healing, you heal the Earth. - Laurel Steinhice

Authentic treachery is found when we abandon ourselves, becoming deaf to the whispers of our spirits and blind to the powerful potential therein. - Joaquin Muriel Espinosa

Stairway To Heaven (Led Zepplin)
There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall, but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

Ooh, it makes me wonder

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who standing looking

Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it really makes me wonder

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on

And it makes me wonder, Oh oh oh

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
